Every year in the United States there are thousands of lawsuits against doctors and hospitals. This fact probably does not surprise you. But, what might surprise you is that many doctors are repeatedly sued, and these medical professionals make up most the cases in the United States.

How do you know if your doctor or hospital is one of the repeat offenders? How comfortable would you be in the waiting room if you knew that the doctor treating you or your family member had been sued 3, 4, or even 5 times?

The doctor or hospital is not going to volunteer that information. But that does not mean you cannot obtain it. Let our medical malpractice attorneys give you a few tips on how to discover if your doctor or hospital in Atlanta has been sued and if so, how many times.

State Medical Board

Every state has a state medical board. The state medical board is where a doctor goes to obtain their license. This is also the board that handles discipline, like suspending or revoking the medical license. The state medical board for Atlanta is the Georgia Composite Medical Board.

The information this site can give you is limited. But there is some information to help you on the physician’s profile page. Another resource that may tell you if a doctor has lost a malpractice suit is the Administers in Medicine or AIM.

County Clerk’s Office

If your doctor or hospital has ever been sued, the county clerk has a record of it. You can contact the clerk online or via phone and inquire about the doctor or hospital. These are public records, and you can get a copy. In some cases, the copy is free online and other times you may have to pay a small fee and have a copy mailed to you.

Google It!

After you have completed this preliminary research, don’t forget to do some digging online. Searching for your doctor by “name + malpractice + city” will usually pull up the information. But switch up your search words to make sure you get everything. Do the same with the hospital. You will find a load of information online. This may include:

  • Lawsuits
  • Settlements
  • Reviews from other doctors
  • Patients complaints
  • Complaints from previous cities in which the doctor worked

In short, it will take some good old-fashioned digging to find out the information you need, but you will find it. Further, you may find out information that will help your attorney. Even if you do not find everything you expected to find, take the information to your personal injury attorney. They have resources to uncover information that you do not have access to normally. If you have been injured because of the neglect or carelessness of a doctor or medical facility, do not ignore it. Take them to court.

If you are checking out a doctor before you decide to use him or her, that is wise. However, it is also critical to understand that just because a doctor was sued does not mean that they are not a good doctor. It is the results of the lawsuit that you should be interested in finding out.
